I would like to discuss House Bill 2060 for Internet Radio Equality Act. I could use the script given to me by “savenetradio.org” but I believe my own story would be more convincing. First off, I would like to reveal something about myself. I am not 17 years old and sing rap or hip-hop. I am almost 60 years old. I have been songwriting off and on for 40 years or more. Usually I write as a hobby. I joined a local songwriting club in the eighties to learn as much as I could about the art and business that supports it. After some trials and errors, I mailed many tapes of my music to Nashville (and other places) for publishers to hear, in hopes of receiving a publishing contract. Mind you, all my material was created by “mail-order” demo studios as I was too timid to sing my own material myself. Almost all of my tapes were rejected and returned, so I gave up for a while, thinking my gift just wasn’t good enough for people to listen to. Recently I brought out of the closet all those old tapes and notebooks, reconsidering that I could really write. With pencil and paper, I started writing again. Some of my lyrics were even better than what I heard on today’s radio stations. Both of my parents died of Cancer at a young age, and I was rapidly approaching that evil numbered birthday myself. I joined a local chapter of a folk music club and, with GREAT FEAR I performed on stage for the first time 3 years ago. At 57, this not a good age to start a music career, but I didn’t care. I wasn’t possessed to obtain a publishing contract. I sang and played just to be listened to. I have completed my first CD and I am in the process of doing my second one. Our little folk music club had an internet radio station going until all this hoopla about payments and rights shut it down. But before then, I heard myself for the first time on our internet radio station and was thrilled beyond all belief. I didn’t care if 3 or 3000 people were tuned in. All I knew was that this was me and other people were listening to hear my music. Without the internet, I wouldn’t have had this opportunity. I know all the lobbyists from the massive radio stations and record companies are trying their best to homogenize what people listen to and buy. I am not arguing about their loss of revenue because they’re not keeping up to the changing times. But to me, this sounds like payola of the fifties all over again. Whoever has the deepest pockets gets the airplay. As an independent artist who is not competing with Garth Brooks or Alan Jackson for airtime, won’t you let me live my little piece of a dream before I die. Don Noble Tampa, FL
